The Battle

History & Significance

Before Otterburn itself, Douglas led a raiding party deep into England, reaching the gates of Newcastle. He seized Hotspur's pennon in a skirmish beneath the walls and taunted him: "I will plant this in Scotland and you may come for it." Hotspur pursued to redeem his honour — which led directly to the night battle at Otterburn. The loss of the pennon was the direct cause of the main battle.
