History & Significance

Birmingham was a major centre of Chartism and the Bull Ring riots of July 1839 saw Metropolitan Police sent from London clash with crowds in the Bull Ring following the arrest of Chartist speakers. Cavalry charges dispersed crowds and many were arrested in the most serious Chartist disturbances in the Midlands.
