History & Significance

When Cartimandua handed Caratacus to Rome, her estranged husband Venutius led the anti-Roman faction of the Brigantes in revolt. Rome sent auxiliary cohorts to restore the client queen. Tacitus records that the Romans won the battle but the war of influence continued. This was the first direct Roman military intervention in Brigantian internal politics.
