The Thames crossing at Eynsham west of Oxford was secured by Parliamentary forces during the investment of Oxford in 1646, cutting the western road from Oxford toward Faringdon and the Royalist west. By controlling Eynsham, Parliamentary cavalry prevented supplies or reinforcements reaching Oxford from the west.
