The Battle

History & Significance

During the Barons War Llywelyn ap Gruffudd allied with Simon de Montfort and invaded Glamorgan, raiding the territories of Gilbert de Clare. The invasion was timed to prevent de Clare from reinforcing the royalists. De Montfort was killed at Evesham shortly afterwards but Llywelyn's military position remained strong. The Treaty of Montgomery 1267 recognised him as Prince of Wales and overlord of the Welsh princes in exchange for homage to Henry III.
