The Battle

History & Significance

Only weeks after his coronation at Scone following Dupplin Moor, Edward Balliol was caught at night at Annan by a Scottish force under Archibald Douglas, Marjorie Bruce's son and others. Balliol barely escaped across the Solway, reportedly in only his shirt, while many of his companions were killed. The Rout of Annan demonstrated the shallowness of Balliol's support outside the Disinherited and forced Edward III of England into more direct intervention to preserve the Balliol cause.
