History & Significance

The Yorkshire coast signal stations built by Theodosius after 368 AD provided an early warning system against seaborne raiders. Archaeological excavation at Filey signal station found evidence of violent destruction — burnt material and disarticulated human remains consistent with massacre. The signal stations were systematically attacked and destroyed, probably by Pictish seaborne raiders in the late 4th century.
