History & Significance

The Catholic earls Huntly and Erroll defeated a much larger government force despite being outnumbered five to one. The victory was attributed to their use of Spanish cannon. James VI was furious — the earls had been secretly corresponding with Philip II of Spain. Despite the military victory, international pressure forced the earls into temporary exile.
