The Battle

History & Significance

Glasgow and west of Scotland weavers struck in 1812 demanding the enforcement of legal minimum wage rates set by magistrates. When the magistrates refused to enforce the rates and employers ignored them, weavers held mass meetings. Military cavalry patrolled to prevent disorder while the strike collapsed without legal redress.
