History & Significance

A Yorkist victory achieved partly through treachery — a Lancastrian commander switched sides mid-battle. Henry VI was captured sitting in his tent and treated with great courtesy. The victory put the Yorkists in control of the king, but the queen Margaret of Anjou continued the war from the north.
