History & Significance

Wressle Castle, the Percy family's East Riding residence, held a Royalist garrison throughout the main phase of the Yorkshire war. It was besieged after Marston Moor and eventually surrendered and slighted. The castle — then one of the finest in the East Riding — was partially demolished by Parliament. Its ruins survive today. The Percy family's estate was sequestered, a blow to one of the north's great dynasties that had backed the wrong side.
