The Battle

History & Significance

The last baronial rebellion against Edward II. Andrew Harclay held the bridge and ford over the Ure with northern spearmen, breaking Lancaster's cavalry charge in the fashion already proven at Stirling Bridge. Lancaster was captured, convicted of treason and beheaded at Pontefract — where his cult as a popular saint quickly grew among those who hated Edward's favourites. The victory temporarily secured Edward II but stored up further resentment.
