History & Significance

Downham Market in west Norfolk was secured as a Parliamentary post in 1643 controlling the approaches to the Isle of Ely and the route between Lynn and Cambridge. Parliamentary cavalry from Downham conducted patrols that kept west Norfolk under control and prevented Royalist activity from disrupting the Eastern Association fenland communications.
