History & Significance

Castle Rising in west Norfolk, with its enormous Norman keep, was briefly occupied as a Royalist strongpoint. Parliament secured it rapidly; its Norman keep was not suitable for the new style of warfare with artillery. Its possession gave Parliament control of the north-west Norfolk coast near King's Lynn.
