Owain Glyndwr launched a major assault on Caernarfon in November 1403. The outer gate was breached and Welsh forces entered the lower town. The castle itself held under the constable John de Bolde. The attack was co-ordinated with fighting across north Wales and demonstrated Glyndwr at the height of his power, able to threaten the greatest of the Edwardian castles. The castle was never actually taken despite this near-success.
