History & Significance

When Alan of Galloway died in 1234 he left only daughters, and Alexander II tried to divide the lordship. An illegitimate son Thomas of Atholl led a revolt, claiming the whole of Galloway. Alexander's forces invaded and crushed the rebellion. Thomas was captured and executed. The partition of Galloway and its integration into the Scottish feudal system was a major step in Alexander II's consolidation of royal authority over the peripheral regions.
