The Battle

History & Significance

In 1257 Llywelyn ap Gruffudd swept through south Wales in a campaign that brought virtually all the Welsh princes under his overlordship. An English force under Stephen Bauzan was routed near Llandeilo, with Bauzan himself killed. This victory, combined with Llywelyn's other 1257 successes (including at Garthmyl near the Montgomery border), enabled him to proclaim himself Prince of Wales the following year. The English were unable to respond effectively with their military resources stretched elsewhere.
