The Battle

History & Significance

Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, extended Norman control deep into mid-Wales by establishing the castle and lordship of Montgomery, named after his Norman home. His operations into what would become Montgomeryshire created a forward base for Norman penetration of the Severn headwaters and began the process of planting Norman colonists into Welsh territory that would eventually produce the Marcher lordships of mid-Wales.
