History & Significance

After Bannockburn, Bruce imposed a systematic devastation policy on the English border counties: pay tribute or be burned. Berwickshire, still partly controlled by England, was repeatedly raided. The raids served both to extract resources for the Scottish crown and to make English governance of the border counties impossible. By 1318 Berwick itself was recovered by the Scots.
