History & Significance

Wolvercote, north of Oxford on the road toward Woodstock, was the site of a Royalist outpost action during the Parliamentary investment of 1646. Royalist cavalry from Oxford attempted to maintain communication with Woodstock garrison and the northern approaches; Parliamentary forces engaged them at Wolvercote to seal the northern perimeter of the siege.
