In April 1645 Montrose stormed and briefly occupied Dundee, sacking the town for supplies and ransom. His forces were in the middle of looting the town when a Covenanting army appeared and Montrose was compelled to withdraw with his loot-laden troops, conducting a fighting retreat. The sack of Dundee was controversial but provided Montrose with badly needed supplies and funds.
