The Battle

History & Significance

King Haakon IV of Norway brought a great fleet to reassert Norwegian sovereignty over the Hebrides. A storm scattered his ships and drove some ashore near Largs. A skirmish on the beach between stranded Norse crews and Scottish forces was tactically inconclusive, but Haakon's strategic mission had failed. He died in Orkney on the return voyage. The Treaty of Perth (1266) transferred the Western Isles to Scotland for 4,000 marks, ending Norse overlordship of the Hebrides.
