History & Significance

After Cromwell's victory at Inverkeithing, General Monck besieged Stirling Castle. The governor Cunningham surrendered after a brief bombardment. The Parliamentary occupation of Scotland was now nearly complete — Dunnottar Castle (housing the Scottish crown jewels) was the last significant hold-out.
