History & Significance

Aberystwyth Castle was one of Glyndŵr's key captured fortresses — he held it from 1404 to 1408. Prince Henry (the future Henry V) conducted the English siege, deploying cannon and cutting off sea supply. The garrison negotiated a conditional surrender in 1407 — then rejected it when Glyndŵr appeared with relief forces. The castle finally fell in 1408 as the revolt collapsed.

Forces Involved

English (Prince Henry's force): c. 1,000–2,000 men. Welsh garrison: c. 200–400 defenders.
