History & Significance

Following the Trot of Turiff, Montrose advanced on Aberdeen and occupied the city for the Covenanting cause. He imposed Covenanting authority on the city and its merchants, forced subscription of the National Covenant on the population, and garrisoned the burgh. The Gordon royalists could not resist the Covenanting field army.
