De Burgh escaped from Devizes Castle in 1233 and fled to Wales to the protection of Richard Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, who had raised rebellion against Henry III. His escape reignited the conflict as Richard Marshal used de Burgh's grievances as a rallying point. Royal forces pursued him. His flight demonstrated how personal political rivalries produced armed conflict even in Henry III's early personal rule.
