History & Significance

Skipton Castle, the principal seat of the Clifford earls of Cumberland, was the last major castle in the West Riding to surrender. The garrison under Sir John Mallory held out for three years despite blockade and periodic pressure. When Naseby destroyed Royalist military power, Skipton became indefensible but continued to resist until December 1645. Lady Anne Clifford later repaired it; it is the best-preserved Civil War-era castle in Yorkshire.
