History & Significance

Caerphilly Castle — the largest castle in Wales and second largest in Britain — was garrisoned during the Civil War. Its great water defences made it formidable but it was not the scene of a dramatic siege. Parliament slighted part of the castle after the war. One of the towers was undermined and leans at a greater angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa — a result of either the slighting or earlier subsidence.
