The Battle

History & Significance

After Robert's landing at Portsmouth, both brothers brought their armies to a confrontation near Winchester. Many barons on both sides were reluctant to fight their own kinsmen across the lines, and mediation led to negotiations rather than battle. The Treaty of Alton was concluded near Winchester, with Henry paying Robert a pension in exchange for his recognition as king and Robert's renunciation of his claim to England.
