The Battle

History & Significance

Earl Hugh Bigod used Framlingham and Eye castles as bases to raid across Suffolk during the great revolt against Henry II. Towns including Haughley were burned. Royal forces under Humphrey de Bohun were hard-pressed to contain the raids. The East Anglian dimension of the rebellion was a serious threat to royal control of the region.
