History & Significance

Gordon cavalry under Lord Gordon conducted sweeping operations across Speyside in 1645 in support of Montrose's campaign, raiding Covenanting supporters in Moray and Banffshire, securing horses and supplies, and blocking Covenanting reconnaissance. The Gordon horse were the most effective royalist cavalry in Scotland and gave Montrose a significant tactical advantage in the northeast.
