History & Significance

After the storming of Berwick in 1296 and Wallace's victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297, the English garrison at Berwick was under intense pressure. Scottish forces besieged and raided around Berwick repeatedly. The garrison held but supply convoys were attacked. Berwick's garrison became the pivot of English operations in Scotland and its maintenance consumed enormous resources throughout the Wars of Independence.
