The Battle

History & Significance

Pevensey Castle, which had been fortified since the Conquest (within the old Roman fort of Anderida), was a royalist stronghold during the Second Barons War. De Montfort's forces besieged it in 1264 as part of the campaign to control the southeast before and after the Battle of Lewes. Pevensey's position on the coast made it a potential royalist resupply point and it had to be neutralised. The siege was one of several concurrent operations by which de Montfort sought to dominate southern England.
