History & Significance

South Cadbury hillfort — later romanticised as Camelot in the Arthurian cycle — was a major Durotrigan stronghold. Leslie Alcock excavations revealed a vivid conquest-period destruction horizon: smashed pottery, Roman military metalwork concentration, and human skeletal remains with perimortem trauma consistent with an artillery-supported infantry assault. The hillfort commanded the route through the Somerset-Dorset border country.
