The Battle

History & Significance

The young Edward III led his first military campaign to intercept a Scottish raiding force in Weardale. The Scots led him on an exhausting chase through the hills, living off the land. At one point Douglas led a night raid into the English camp and nearly captured the king. The campaign humiliated Edward III and led directly to the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton 1328 — the "Shameful Peace" that recognised Scottish independence.
