The Battle

History & Significance

Scottish raids in 1296 in the immediate aftermath of the Berwick massacre and the formal opening of the Wars of Independence reached surprisingly far south and east into Northumberland. The reach of Scottish raiding to Tynemouth — on the coast east of Newcastle — demonstrated the vulnerability of the English north to Scottish fast cavalry raids. The priory's fortification was strengthened as a direct result.
