History & Significance

During Madog's rebellion the partially-built Caernarfon Castle — Edward I's centrepiece of Welsh subjugation — was stormed by Welsh rebels. The town was burned and the Sheriff of Anglesey hanged. Edward I responded by personally campaigning in Wales, completing Caernarfon, Conway and Harlech as the Iron Ring that would permanently subdue the country.
