The Battle

History & Significance

The Corieltauvi of the East Midlands and Lincolnshire appear to have submitted to Rome without major pitched battle following the fall of Camulodunum. Unlike the Catuvellauni or the Iceni, the Corieltauvi are not recorded by Tacitus as organising significant military resistance. The establishment of Lindum (Lincoln) as a legionary fortress by Legio IX Hispana during the 50s AD was the primary Roman military installation in the region. Corieltauvi coinage continued in circulation suggesting a relatively peaceful transition.

Forces Involved

Roman: Legio IX Hispana. Corieltauvi: tribal levies, probably not in organised resistance
