History & Significance

Hengest and Aesc fought the Britons at Crecganford (identified with Crayford in Kent) in 457, killing four thousand men. The Chronicle records that the Britons abandoned Kent and fled to London in great terror. The battle gave the Jutish invaders effective control of the whole of Kent, one of the most decisive early Saxon conquests.
