Icehouse at Clock House, Green Street Green is a nineteenth-century ice storage structure situated in Kent. The building represents the utility architecture of the Victorian period, when mechanical refrigeration was not yet widely available and ice harvested from frozen ponds and stored in insulated buildings served domestic and commercial purposes. The icehouse would have been an important adjunct to the main residence, allowing the preservation of perishable foodstuffs and the production of ice for domestic use throughout the year. Its survival as a standing structure provides material evidence of domestic provisioning practices and technological arrangements of the nineteenth century.
