History & Significance

Dalkeith Castle held the Scottish royal regalia and treasure under royalist control at the outbreak of the Bishops Wars. The Covenanters seized the castle in early 1639, capturing the Honours of Scotland and preventing Charles I from using them to fund resistance to the Covenanting movement. The seizure of Dalkeith demonstrated the Covenanting movement's determination to use all available resources against the Crown.
