History & Significance

Helmsley Castle in the North Riding was a formidable Royalist stronghold that held out for three months after Marston Moor. Sir Jordan Crossland was wounded when the outer works were taken; the garrison then surrendered. Parliament deliberately slighted the castle; the dramatic ruin with its collapsed tower split by demolition is a direct result of Civil War destruction.
