History & Significance

Rhys ap Thomas conducted the critical muster of Welsh forces in west Wales in August 1485 as Henry Tudor marched north. Rhys had been Richard IIIs most important Welsh officer but switched his allegiance with the calculation that Henry was the stronger bet. He assembled several thousand Welsh soldiers from Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, and Cardiganshire, forming the largest single contingent of the Tudor army at Bosworth. His decision was the most consequential act of defection of the entire Wars of the Roses.
