History & Significance

At the Battle of Winceby on 11 October 1643 Cromwell was unhorsed in the first charge when his horse was killed under him. He was briefly in danger of being trampled before remounting a trooper horse and leading the decisive second charge that routed the Royalist cavalry. The action cemented his reputation as a cavalry commander willing to lead from the front.
