The Battle

History & Significance

During the second phase of the Wars of Independence, Fife was contested between the Bruce party and the English-backed Balliol claimant. Edward III himself was in Scotland in 1335 conducting a broad campaign. Raids along the Firth of Forth threatened the Fife coastal towns. Scottish defenders resisted English naval raids and overland incursions in a series of small engagements that eventually turned the tide toward the Bruce cause under Andrew Murray.
