The Battle

History & Significance

Warwick Castle was secured for Parliament in August 1642 by Lord Brooke — one of the most committed Parliamentary commanders. When Royalist forces appeared before it, the garrison repulsed them. The castle remained a Parliamentary stronghold throughout the war, giving Parliament a vital base in the heart of Royalist-leaning Warwickshire from which to threaten Royalist communications between Oxford and the north.
