History & Significance

In the period between Lewes and Evesham, Simon de Montfort was trapped west of the Severn by Prince Edward. Hereford was his base of operations and he used it to try to coordinate with his son and Gilbert de Clare before his fatal crossing of the Severn. The city saw military activity as de Montfort's forces moved and the royalists sealed off escape routes.
