The Battle

History & Significance

While unable to take Caernarfon Castle or the walled town, Glyndwr forces in 1401 attacked and burned the outlying settlement and countryside around Caernarfon. The English settler community in the Edwardian bastide towns of north Wales was repeatedly threatened throughout the rebellion. The attacks forced settlers inside the walls and destroyed agricultural infrastructure, causing severe economic disruption even where the castles and town walls held.
