The Battle

History & Significance

Cartimandua scandalised Brigantian aristocracy by divorcing Venutius and marrying his armour-bearer Vellocatus. Tacitus describes the Brigantian nobility as furious. Roman auxiliary forces again had to intervene to protect the client queen. This episode shows how deeply Roman military power was embedded in the internal politics of the largest British tribe.

Forces Involved

Roman auxiliary cohorts dispatched by governor Didius Gallus
