After Culloden, Cumberland marched to Fort Augustus — the fort the Jacobites had captured and blown up in March — and established it as his forward base for the pacification of the western and central Highlands. Government columns radiated from Fort Augustus into the Great Glen, Glenmoriston, Stratherick and Lochaber. The fort was rapidly rebuilt. Cumberland spent several weeks at Fort Augustus before returning to Inverness. It was from here that the systematic burning of townships, seizure of cattle and hunting of Jacobite fugitives was organised and directed. The duke's presence at Fort Augustus was the administrative centre of the post-Culloden destruction.
